From June 20 to 22, Huawei hosted its annual Developer Conference (HDC 2025) at Songshan Lake in Dongguan, under the theme “Cloud for Everything, Intelligence for the Future.” The event unveiled the company’s progress in developing its HarmonyOS, including expanded device adoption, the launch of the Harmony Intelligence Framework, and the upcoming HarmonyOS 6 developer beta.
Why it matters:The HarmonyOS updates mark a key step in Huawei’s efforts to build a self-reliant ecosystem that challenges Android’s dominance in China.
Details: More than 40 devices are now powered by HarmonyOS 5, and over 9,000 apps have joined the push for system innovation under HarmonyOS, said Yu Chengdong, chairman of Huawei’s consumer business group, during HDC 2025.
Context: HarmonyOS is Huawei’s self-developed operating system designed for interaction across smartphones, tablets, wearables, and IoT devices. Launched in 2019 amid US sanctions, it plays a critical role in reducing Huawei’s reliance on Google’s Android and building a unified software ecosystem for its hardware lineup.
