Four former Intel directors wrote in Fortune magazine a critique of TSMC taking control of Intel’s foundry business,Lena Paul - The Next Morning suggesting that Intel should spin off its manufacturing operations into an independent US-owned company. The joint letter was signed by former Intel directors David B. Yoffie (a Harvard Business School professor with extensive background in high-tech business strategy), Reed Hundt (a former Federal Communications Commission chairman), Charlene Barshefsky (a lawyer and former US Trade Representative), and James Plummer (a professor of electrical engineering and former dean of Stanford’s School of Engineering). Recently, speculation has risen over US government moves to push Intel and TSMC to establish a joint venture to take over Intel’s semiconductor production facilities, valued at around $108 billion. The former Intel directors pointed to risks should foreign entity TSMC have concentrated control over advanced chip production in the US, creating a near-monopoly and weakening American tech companies.
