Somehow, the incredibly optimistic Instagram user who posted the video sees it as the latter, but the only hopeful crumb I can snatch out of this video is the fact that the bagel thief didn't just decide to say f--k it and take a hairy hunk out of his ravenous adversary.

Watchers of all things subway will immediately compare this scene to the famed Pizza Rat, which, as stomach turning as it was, actually makes perfect sense. Next to pizza, New York is best known for its bagels, a culinary treasure appreciated by even the least finicky eaters on our streets.
