4K Blu-Ray disks are Watch Daddy Issues xxx movie 5 (2016)what you go for if you absolutely have to have the best TV experience available on the market right now. This new format offers 2,160 lines of resolution, which is double what you get in regular Blu Ray HD. It can also support the more lifelike 60 frames per second.
Sorry, streaming services: For crispness, color and clarity, and for the Dolby Atmos sound, 4K disks will beat the already-impressive 4K content on Netflix every time.
SEE ALSO: Apple TV might get 4K video streaming, but it'll still lag behindBut like all new entertainment tech, 4K Blu Ray suffers a chicken-and-egg problem. It's expensive and the price will only come down when more people buy it (plus the necessary 4K TVs), which will only happen when there's something worth buying that was shot especially for the format, which will only happen when more people are able to play it.
4K Blu Ray players still run upwards of $250. (You can also play them on the Xbox One S, which also costs $250 or more.) The cheapest 4K TV is about the same price. The limited selection of disks are around $35 apiece. Are you really going to drop that much cash just so you can watch The Martianor Deadpoolin maximum high-res once or twice?
What the technology needs is the visual equivalent of a killer app — something you'll watch over and over again, your mouth agape at the wonder of the world. Something where 4K isn't just nice to have, it's essential — transforming a merely dazzling experience into an ecstatic one.
Enter Planet Earth II, the insanely beautiful nature series narrated by the legendary David Attenborough. After screening for the last six weeks on BBC America, Planet Earth II arrived on 4K Blu Ray this week, and quickly became a bestseller on Amazon.
No wonder: the six-part documentary, three years in the making, was shot entirely in the 4K format. Which means those stunning, unprecedented shots of snow leopards, pigeon-hunting catfish and billion-locust swarms were literally half as sharp when screened on TV as when they were filmed.
I'm probably not the only AV nerd in America who rushed out to get a player just so he could screen Planet Earth II at its full potential. But I am here to report that, for this show at least, the format lives up to the hype. Here, finally, is a viewing experience as sharp as reality, focused entirely on reality worth seeing.
It was as if my living room had gained a magic window, outside of which you could see swimming sloths more adorable than anything in Zootopia, or bioluminescent beetles that beat all black light costumes at Burning Man. Eagles swooped with bright red dots of blood on their talons, while dolphins glistened and tigers pounced in operatic slow motion.
And then there was the baby iguana and the snakes. Oh my god, the snakes.
I can't tell you anything technical about the High Dynamic Range or DTS-HD surround sound touted on the cover. I can tell you that I've never seen or heard anything clearer in my life, that I felt fully immersed in each of the six environments featured in the show, that the Hans Zimmer soundtrack adds the expected level of oomph, and that for six hours, my wife and I offered commentary that exclusively began with "wow" and "holy shit."
And in probably the greatest compliment possible, our lazy-ass house cat didn't curl up and fall asleep as per usual; he too could not stop staring at all the prey on the screen. Cat TV just got a major upgrade.
Only you can judge if this all sounds worth the major scratch needed to upgrade to a 4K setup. But at least there are no format wars getting in your way this time around: There's just one format on the market, so you don't need to hold back for that reason.
But if you are able to take your family (and your pets) to Planet Earth IIin the style intended by its producers, chances are they will thank you for the best virtual safari your living room can possibly offer.
