Apple CEO Tim Cook will be Watch Mary Carey All Babe Network (2013)the first to tell you — he loves the Apple Watch and its health tracking capabilities. So if there's anyone who would serve as a high-profile guinea pig for a breakthrough new feature for the device, Cook's a top candidate.
Which is why it may come as no surprise that Cook has been spotted out and around on Apple's campus sporting a specialized version of the Watch, according to a report from CNBC. Connected to Cook's Watch is a new device that is said to be a prototype of a glucose-tracker, which is rumored to be in development for a future version of the wearable.
Apple's many mouthpieces will be the first to tell you about how the company is working to revolutionize the world — but this feature has the potential to be truly life-changing. The addition of a non-invasive blood-sugar tracker to the Watch's toolkit could be a real, immediate breakthrough for the millions of people around the world living with diabetes.
This is far from the first time we've heard about the potential for a glucose-monitoring Watch feature. Apple reportedly has an entire team of scientists hard at work on the tech's development, which could come in the form of modular Watch bands or some other external add-on to the device.
The glucose monitoring function would do more than just add another health-centric feature to the world's best-selling wearable — it would make it an essential medical device for anyone with diabetes. Today, those people are forced to track their glucose through a variety of more invasive means, like pricking their fingers for blood tests.
Cook has admitted that he's worn a glucose monitor before, so this report does carry some extra weight. He told a group of University of Glasgow students about his experience wearing such a device in February, CNBCreports, and reiterated the lengths that people who live with diabetes go through every day in order to monitor their blood sugar using conventional means.
There's no doubt that Apple is focused on bringing health tech to the masses via the Watch — Cook said as much in February. "This is an area where I'm very excited about Apple's contribution," he told the group. "Very excited."
