Greg/Gary (Jon Gries) has been a creepy spectre haunting The the courtesan and the nun: finding spaces for female eroticism in renaissance italyWhite Lotussince Season 1, and getting more and more sinister with each passing season.
But after White Lotus worker Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) clocks him as the husband of Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) in Season 3, rightly assuming he had a hand in her death in order to inherit her vast fortune, it seems like Belinda may now be at risk from him herself.
So what happened between Greg and Belinda in episode 7, and what could it mean for the finale? Let's dive in.
After reluctantly attending a dinner party at his house, Belinda is pulled aside by Greg for extremely loaded conversation in private.
"So you know who I am," he says. "And I'm sure you also know that something very tragic happened to my wife, Tanya. I had nothing to do with it, to make that clear! It was getting very complicated back home and I just didn't want to spend the rest of my life dealing with legal shit, and lawyers, and people making assumptions. I love Thailand. Love the people. I bought this house. I'm happy. I want to live the rest of my life right here. And I just don't want to have any more headaches, if I can help it."
It sounds like he's building up to a threat, but then Greg suddenly changes tack and makes Belinda an offer: $100,000 that she can put towards the business she spoke to Tanya about in Season 1.
"Tanya would have wanted that," says Greg. "And I know that she would also want me to spend the rest of my years in peace. Maybe in exchange, you can honor that."
Belinda's response? "I need to sleep on it."
As much as Greg appears to be understanding of Belinda's request to think about the offer, it's clear from his ominously blank gaze as he watches her leave his party that he's anything but.
Belinda's son Zion (Nicholas Duvernay) thinks he'll come after them both if she refuses his terms, but will Greg actually go to the murderous lengths he suggests?
It's impossible to say for certain, but the short answer is probably. From a moral perspective we already know Greg has no issue arranging to have someone killed, and now that he has a vast fortune he likely has even greater means to do it. He's a cunning character only interested in himself, and with the life he's built in Thailand he has a lot to lose. Would he pay for one more murder to avoid his past catching up with him? Almost certainly.
If we had to guess, we'd say that Greg already has a backup plan for what he'll do if Belinda refuses the money. We'll have to wait for the finale to find out exactly what that is — and whether Mike White will risk riots with the death of yet another beloved character, especially one whose future with spa manager Pornchai (Dom Hetrakul) is our top priority.
