Some of Elizabeth Holmes' attorneys are trying to ditch the Theranos founder as a client — because she isn't paying them.
As reported in the Mercury News, lawyers from Cooley LLP submitted a court filing on Sept. 30 asking for approval to stop representing Holmes.
Cooley LLP has been representing the disgraced founder in a class action civil suit against her, Theranos, and Walgreens. Apparently, Holmes has not paid them for over a year, and they don't ever expect payment from her due to her financial, um, situation.
SEE ALSO: 'The Inventor' is a monster movie. Elizabeth Holmes is its star. The "situation" is that Holmes faces civil and criminal lawsuits saying that she defrauded patients, investors, and the public with untrue claims about her company's ability to perform blood tests with a drop of blood from a finger prick. In the criminal suit alone, she could pay up to $2.25 million for her 11 counts of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, plus restitution to victims.
In the meantime, Holmes has been partying at Burning Man and even getting married. Apparently paying her lawyers wasn't on her to-do list.
A different firm represents Holmes in the criminal suit against her, and they did not say whether Holmes has paid up for their billable hours, yet.
