Volkswagen is considering plans for an electric Beetle, according to VW's chairman Herbert Diess.

He also added that if an electric successor would be made, it would actually be a throwback to the original rear-wheel drive Beetle.
“If we wanted to do a Beetle, electrically it would be much better than today's model, much closer to history, because it could be rear-wheel drive,” said Diess.
Volkswagen hasn't started working on one, but Diess said that the concept of an electric Beetle would be put forward when the company's board votes on ways to expand the company's range of electric cars.
Earlier this year, the German automaker announced that it would be producing the ID Buzz, an electric version of its classic microbus.
Diess had said then that he was flooded with letters and emails from excited customers asking the company to "please build this car."
Volkswagen also announced earlier in September that it planned to spend over $24 billion producing electric vehicles by 2030.
Looks like the Beetle is primed to go electric. We can't wait.
